Gutte Eriksen

(Danish 1918-2008)

Gutte Eriksen studied ceramics at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, and upon graduating established workshops with two other artists, and then her own workshop in Kastrup in 1942. In 1948 she travelled to St Ives to work with Bernard Leach, and then on to France. She also visited Japan in the 1970s to work with potters there, meeting Leach again, and developing her interest in East Asian and particularly Korean ceramics. Her works are characterised by the distinctive glazes she developed, in deep, rich tones with pitted surfaces, usually on simple forms and with minimal decoration.

Eriksen was an influential figure in Danish Ceramics, both through her work and her teaching at Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in the 1960s and 1970s, but also internationally renowned during her lifetime.
