In Private Hands | The Shipley Collection

In May 2024 Maak were entrusted with presenting 'In Private Hands | The Shipley Collection’, a special auction dedicated to an important private collection featuring the masters of British Studio Ceramics. The collection included works by Hans Coper, Lucie Rie, Magdalene Odundo and the leading names in contemporary ceramic art.

From the illustrious collection of the late John and Joan Shipley of Portland, Oregon, this focused presentation of thirty eight lots also featured significant pieces by Bernard Leach and important works by the leading ceramic artists to have graduated from the Royal College of Art in the 1970s, including Magdalene Odundo, Elizabeth Fritsch, Alison Britton, Jacqueline Poncelet and Martin Smith.

The auction was a huge success with bidding from across the globe resulting in a hammer total just shy of 1 million and breaking a new world for Elizabeth Fritsch which sold for £51,450 inclusive of buyer's premium.

Other highlights included a Magdalene Odundo, Angled Pot which sold for £238,875, a Hans Coper, Monumental Ovoid Pot which made £202,125 and a Lucie Rie, Footed Bowl which sold for £68,600. (All prices inclusive of Buyer's Premium)
