Alan Wallwork was a British potter, emerging from the post-war ceramics scene in the 1950s, with a distinctive style of hand-built ceramics in sculptural, organic forms.
Wallwork studied at Goldsmith's in London in the 1950s, initially creating more functional designs along with tiles, before moving onto the sculptural works he is best known for. His works are predominantly hand-built, with pitted and pierced surfaces in distinctive organic forms that are reminiscent of gourds and seed-pods. The forms and designs of his ceramics often took inspiration from the Dorset landscape where he was based in later years.
He said of his work, 'My pots have no deep 'message', or not consciously. They have the simple forms I personally warm to and I try to give them a variety of pattern and texture that I find sympathetic to the touch, not just the eye.'
